MAKEshift MASTS

I continued work on my pirate vessel for an upcoming animation with objects residency with CAOS.

I had to take the hull assembly apart because I didn't like how it was fitting. This was not only risky, it was messy too. I had to scape and sand all the annoying bits of hardened model cement. In the end the fit was much more snug and to my liking. Sometimes you just have to put in the extra work to make it worthwhile. I clamped and used elastics to hold it together while it dries.

While the hull is drying I skipped ahead to the mast assembly. They are fragile little pieces made up of many parts glued together. While I can't speak to their stability I can say many pieces make them detailed.

I had to get a little creative to get the masts to be straight when glueing. I put together the base to the upper left and used it to balance a mast assembly upside down on the tallest mast to help the multiple joints dry perpendicular to the table.

Onto itself it is a kinda neat object. I had to pack everything up and move this project aside for another day since I just had something come up that needs to take precedence over the next couple of days.

Model Mayhem

I have a 3 month residency coming up in the new year with the CAOS, Calgary Animated Object Society. I hit the studio and picked up some of my collection of models to be made. I began some assembly on two kits.

I began with a Caribbean pirate ship. Breaking off the parts that I need and sanding off the tabs of each. I have a bunch of paints collected over the years and some other good supplies for model making. I put together the top deck and painted it with dark tan enamel.

I connected all the hull parts and used clamps and a ribbon to keep the pieces together as the glue dried.

I added on the back of the hull. It was tough to get the parts to fit exactly and I have some annoying glue spots and areas that need filling. Luckily, by the end of the process it is the paint that is going to make the difference.

While waiting for parts to dry I also worked on these Chasmosaurus models made by Tamiya. These need a bit of filling in the seams and sanding and they are ready to be painted.

Pirate Page - Frosst sketchbook

"Yo, Ho, Ho, and a bottle of Rum, it's a pirates life for me!"

I drew this sketch with my Copic multi-liners and then colored it in with my Copic markers. I can't prove that art is magic, but the next day (yesterday) My NY style Salsa class was moved, so I ended up going to see the Pirates of the Caribbean instead. I really enjoyed the film, plus it was "cheap night"at the theatre.  I realized through the process of making this drawing, I didn't have any brown or earth tones of copic markers. So today, I went to Inglewood Art Supply and visited my lovely friend Ola where I picked up a few new colors.  I was with a friend and she said: "I've never seen anybody, be that happy and jump around, including a kid over crayons".  What can I say ;P

PINK PIRATE SHIP

I drew straight into this one with my copic marker. It was colored in the same sitting with Prismacolor. It is based on an animation model sheet I found in the QAS library.  I have been wanting to put together a pirate ship model as well (3D). I have one in my studio and my plan is to paint it pink and blue, here is a quick sketch/mock up.

Would real pirates flee at the sight of this ship I wonder?
