Portrait of Mario

It been awesome working at my studio with Martinho and Douglas Friday afternoons. We are painting from life and are paying a model to sit for these sessions.

I was feeling rusty with my oil skills on this one as the blank white canvas stored back at me. I know all to well what it feels like. It took a few sittings to get comfortable with my palette again.
I scraped down the paining from 2 sessions and redrew and started over because I was unhappy wit how it turned out. But now things are going my way. This bit took me around 2.5 hrs. One more sitting and I should have it wrapped up.

I made the hat much larger on the top and will hopefully keep it that way. I need to bring down the eye on the far side and do all the detailing etc, but for not the oil will just get muddy so it is best to let it dry and attack it again next session, just in time before the opening of the Peoples Portrait Prize this Saturday 6 - 9 pm. All 4 floors of the cSPACE King Edward building.

Another "sampler", this time in oil

I prefer oil, and in this sampler I really let my knowledge shine. Its a far tougher medium, because so much history goes along with its use, but its rich creamy texture make is so worth the effort. This sampler went great as you can see below.......with so little time sample the medium for the first time.
Im refining my explanation with these whiteboard notes to accompany my handouts.

These samplers at Swinton's sell out quickly so sign up today on their website if you want to get in the next one!

Sample this

If you have never painted before, there is no real reason to be afraid.......
Try an oil or acrylic "Sampler" with me at Swinton's art supply and instruction one Sunday!
Get an overview of the process and all materials are included so you can try your hand at something new and creative.

You will leave with some experience
 and your first painting
and a head full of info
and you will know know whether or not its for you
and then again, you always have the choice
to paint right over it and start over anyhow!

"Master Painting" overview

I taught a course I designed titled "Master Painting" at the Alberta College of Art and design again this year.  It is based on my work, as well as on the Art study/ research trip I took to Italy and more.
Here is an overview of the work completed in the course by my fabulous students! We cover the Flemish technique, Venetian technique and French academic and a whole lot more! It is such a dense course with demos, presentations and practical advice. In my course we build and prep our stretchers, ground our supports, do masters copies, and a whole lot more,  I cant divulge too much here but take a look at some of the 32 pics I snapped throughout the semester.
