Sample this

If you have never painted before, there is no real reason to be afraid.......
Try an oil or acrylic "Sampler" with me at Swinton's art supply and instruction one Sunday!
Get an overview of the process and all materials are included so you can try your hand at something new and creative.

You will leave with some experience
 and your first painting
and a head full of info
and you will know know whether or not its for you
and then again, you always have the choice
to paint right over it and start over anyhow!

In the palm of my hand

puntista strikes again.
I'm sharing my procedure for the creation of the palm tree piece inspired by my view at the Aquarius suites in Dorado Puerto Rico. My phone and pictures drowned so I only had a few references remaining including the studies I did of these three palms nearly every morning.

I would see the sun rise and set and where the cross meets is the time that I would leave my spot on the beach to meet my group, who drank every night and woke up later in the day. The X marks that spot.

Colour theory final review.

We reached the end of my Colour theory for painters course at ACAD and I did a final class discussion and review to see what they remember and to build these crazy whiteboard notes based on their retention.
Below are a few pics of some of the final projects etc.

Waldorf review

Jumping back a bit, I taught some sessions at one of Calgary's Waldorf schools and I just wanted to update this blog with the students finished pieces that their teacher took after displaying their works in the school. They sent me a truly lovely thank you card which I have prominently displayed on my fridge. Thanks you Waldorf and great work!

A world of colour

Things are getting exciting in my colour theory class for painters. We began working with different colour schemes/harmonies such as monochromatic, analogous and complementary. The students mixed the colours they needed on their palettes then applied them to their various compositions.

Some really gorgeous colours are being developed and some nice colour work is being done on their test panels. I love colour and all the things that can be done with it.  Also I thought I'd mention I have a new video episode up on my Youtube channel, check out the colours from my trip to Japan and hear about the harmony and balance of the aesthetic I saw throughout my trip.
Tonight, I'm uploading the final episode (as it relates to my trip to Japan) so stay tuned for Episode 17 "Composition" where I show some of the Hiroshige prints I saw at the Suntory Art Museum in Tokyo.

Sampler - Oil vs. Acrylic

The great divide. I don't want to pick one favourite over another as both mediums have their uses, strengths and weaknesses. I advise you to try both unless the decision is for a certain reason, such as space, pets, ventilation etc. Both have a lot to offer and there is tons you can do with either. At the end of the day painting is still just pushing colourful goop on a stick covered in hair.

Acrylic sampler previous Sunday's pieces:

Oil Sampler this Sunday, some of the pieces:

Given the short amount of time and the varying degrees of experience and class size, the participants did great in both samplers, and hopefully found some inspiration for them to continue on with the noble craft of painting =;D
